Songs that Grew On ME

Originally written: March 16, 2006

Aside from books, music is my other passion. I do not have any musical talent in my bone, flesh, cell, DNA - whatever you call it. I can't sing a tune even if my life depended on it. I have tried learning to play guitar a few years ago but sadly, I love the guitar but the guitar doesn't love me. So I gave up.

However, I like to think that I have an ear for music. I love watching singing competitions and most of the time, those contestants whom I consider as the best usually emerged as winners. And also, I only watch MTV once in a while coz I prefer listening to music than watching music videos. Most of the time, when a new song was played and I don't know who the singer is, I would guess and most of the time, my guess is correct.

My most preferred music type is the ballads - slow, easy-listening, type without too much brass instruments. They're the type to soothe my nerves and my disposition and appeals to the hopeless romantic in me.

Music often helps me overcome my bad mood fast. It also makes me wake up faster than the loudest of the alarm. So I am ever thankful for music, coz it greatly helps me alot.

I don't have a specific criteria on what makes a song click for me. Most of the time, it's the message of the song. If it gives a positive message, good. Sometimes, I may like the song for it's melody or tune, like Eagle's Hotel California. I still cannot understand the message it was trying to convey but still, I like that song.

And then, I may like a song because it grew on me. Example, Backstreet Boys, NSync and Britney Spears.

BSB! I have never cared for them. I don't like Nick Carter. But I like some of their songs. Because their songs just grew on me. They have some catchy tunes that made me just wanna sing along with it. They also have some romantic songs like As Long As You Love Me and Drowning.

NSYNC: Well, for me, they have better voice quality than BSB. But I only like a few of their songs. The one I love of theirs is This I Promise You and God Must Have Spent....

BRITNEY SPEARS: Lucky for me, I have never contributed to her being a millionaire at such a young age. She's cute I guess, she can dance ok but her voice.....*cringe* It sounds like cheap radio - like tin can. But I admit her songs are so catchy that I just find myself singing along with it each time it's being played on air.

Lately, it's Kelly Clarkson's Because of You. I don't dislike her but then I don't like her too. I was indifferent towards her, I guess. These days I just find myself singing along with it each time it's being played.

But then maybe, it's because that all of these singers/band above are popular. Their songs are often the most requested ones so they're being played over and over again that it really grew on anyone. :D
